Traditional Polish Crafts

traditional polish crafts

Visitors to Cracow Christmas Market see a vast array of Polish hand-made goods, many of wood, metal, glass, wool and other textiles.

Sometimes the craftsman will also be there so that you can watch the art work in progress.

One of the good things about Poland is there is still a good number of craftmen earning a living by producing their individual products in small workshops. Each item is a small work of art and unique.

One of the shops in the Cloth Hall looking out onto the square sells a range of high quality Polish hand-made craft work all year round and is worth a look. There are tapestries, Polish scenes painted on glass, painted wooden carvings, glass lightcatchers and and many beautiful items that would make a souvenir to treasure.

christmas decorations at cracow marketThe market stalls stock all the traditional decorations once associates with Christmas, baubles, wreaths, Christmas trees, stars, gingerbread biscuits, candles, angels, garlands, embroidered tablecloths, dishes with festive designs and sweets.

In Cracow, it is possible to buy that unique hand-made gift that people will treasure for ever. Poland is famous for amber that is crafted into jewellery, ornaments and the most lovely lamps that cast a soft warm golden glow about a room. Silver is the metal of choice that complements amber in jewellery.

There are only so many wooden chess sets, decorative boxes and wooden spoons that people want to buy and although these are still many wooden products made, some of the more attractive items are photo albums with wooden hand carved covers, cut work wall decorations, painted wooden toys, toy chests and hand painted painted child sized chairs. Quality always sells. Order wooden planters, dovecotes, dog kennels, bee hives and chicken houses to take home. There are plenty of very reasonably priced delivery schemes from Poland to the UK and Ireland and shops and stall holders could arrange this for you. You could make a big saving on these wooden items for your garden.

Payment for goods and food at the Christmas Market is in cash. There are numerous money exchange offices, or Kantors, around Cracow city centre. Almost all shops in Cracow accept card payments.

As holiday makers in Poland, many of us prefer to spend our money on good quality goods with artisitic merit rather than cheap mass produced items. There is plenty of artistic talent in Poland and Cracow is one of the best destinations to see it in action.
